Orthopaedic Surgeons
Andrew Baker, MBChB, FRCS, FCS (Orth) SA, FACS, DGOU (Member)
Andrew is the founding partner of Specialist Orthopaedics Incorporated. He trained in arthroplasty (joint replacements) and arthroscopic surgery in Scotland and Australia, completing fellowships in both upper and lower limb surgery.
Andrew remains actively involved in orthopaedic education at UKZN and global trauma care, serving as the musculoskeletal chapter lead for the latest Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) manual. Passionate about innovation, he has contributed to the design and development of orthopaedic implants and pioneered individualised, patient-specific instrumentation in South Africa.
A leader in arthroplasty and arthroscopy for the hip, knee, and shoulder, he is committed to patient care, education, and advancing orthopaedic technology. An avid sportsman, he still plays hockey for the South African Masters and enjoys collecting Scottish single malts.
Ian Stead, MBChB(Stellenbosch); DipPEC(SA);HDipOrth(SA);FCOrth(SA),
Ian is a leading orthopaedic specialist and past president of the South African Foot Surgeon Society. His field of work includes lower limb reconstruction and foot and ankle surgery, paediatric orthopaedic surgery as well as hand and general orthopaedics.
With extensive experience both locally and internationally of routine and complex procedures, Ian has always been passionate about providing exceptional patient care and achieving the best possible outcomes.
Dedicated to lifelong learning, Ian believes that surgical excellence requires continuous study and personal development. He actively invests in his own technical skills while mentoring and supporting the next generation of orthopaedic surgeons.
Andre Human, MBChB (Pretoria), H Dip (Ortho), FC Orth (SA),
Andre has been in private practice for over 15 years, with a special interest in shoulder and knee surgery. He also has extensive experience in trauma surgery and arthroplasty, staying at the forefront of his field by incorporating the latest technologies and techniques.
Andre is an active member of multiple surgical societies and is dedicated to teaching, serving as a faculty member for the Advanced Trauma Life Support course. His approach to patient care is holistic, prioritising individual needs while working closely with peers and other professionals to ensure the best possible outcomes.
Beyond his medical practice, Andre is an avid sportsman and a devoted family man who enjoys escaping to the South African bushveld whenever possible.
Anaesthetists & Medical
Liesl Baker (Anaethetist)- MBChB,FCA(SA), FRCA; Practice No: 0138517
Liesl is a specialist anaesthetist trained in both the UK and South Africa and is a current member of the South African Society of Anaesthetists. She has a particular interest in peri-operative patient care, the use of ultrasound in anaesthesia, and pain management. She also runs a pre-operative clinic dedicated to arthroplasty and high-risk patients.
Passionate about medical education, Liesl played a key role in writing the new Airway Chapter for the Advanced Trauma Life Support (ATLS) manual. She teaches internationally on the ATLS course and serves as a course director in South Africa.
Alongside her associate, Dr. Charlotte Evans, she is committed to providing the highest standard of care to all patients.
Outside of medicine, Liesl is an avid sports enthusiast and has proudly represented her country at the World Masters Hockey Tournament.
Kara Human (Assisting Doctor)- MBChB (Pret) DA
Dr Kara Human is an independent practitioner and has been assisting Dr Andre Human and Dr Stead for the last 10 years.
Kara is a dedicated doctor, successfully balancing her professional career and family life to optimise her attention to detail and special care in patient management.
Kara is married to Dr Andre Human and a mom of 2. She is also a dedicated ultra distance athlete, participating in Comrades, Full Ironman, competing in World Champs.
Charlotte (Anaethetist)- MBChB, DA(SA), FCA(SA); Practice No: 0418900
Charlotte qualified from undergraduate studies at the KZN Nelson Mandela School of Medicine in 2003, completed her internship at Groote Schuur Hospital in 2004, and undertook community service at Taylor Bequest Hospital in Matatiele in 2005. In 2006, she joined the UKZN Department of Anaesthetics as a medical officer and progressed to registrar from 2007 to 2010. After qualifying as an anaesthesiologist in 2010, she worked as a consultant at Inkosi Albert Luthuli Central Hospital for five years, including one year in the paediatric anaesthesia department. During this time, she was also responsible for undergraduate training before transitioning to her current practice at the end of 2014.
